Important Vocabulary

Numerator: The top of a fraction
Denominator: The bottom of a fraction

Numerator = 5

Denominator = 9

*Remember:

“Look Down” for the Denominator

        
Improper Fraction: A fraction in which the numerator is bigger than the denominator.
(The top is bigger than the bottom!) 9/5
               

 

Proper Fraction: A fraction in which the numerator is smaller than the denominator.

  (The top is smaller than the bottom) 5/9           


Mixed Number: An integer (whole number) followed by a proper fraction.
  1 4/5

Prerequisites

Changing from a mixed number to improper form

  1. Multiply the denominator by the integer (whole number).
  2. Add the result to the numerator.
  3. Place the answer in the numerator and keep the original denominator.

  1 4/5   = 5(1) +4 = 9 = 9/5

Changing from improper form to a mixed number

  1. Divide the numerator by the denominator
  2. Write down the integer (whole number) and next to it place the remainder in the numerator of a fraction.
  3. Keep the original denominator.

   

9/5 5 goes into 9 one time with 4 leftover =1 4/5
