Important Vocabulary
Numerator: The top of a fraction
Denominator: The bottom of a fraction
Numerator = 5
Denominator = 9
*Remember:
“Look Down” for the Denominator
Improper Fraction: A fraction in which the numerator is bigger than the denominator.
(The top is bigger than the bottom!) 
Proper Fraction: A fraction in which the numerator is smaller than the denominator.
(The top is smaller than the bottom)
Mixed Number: An integer (whole number) followed by a proper fraction.
Prerequisites
Changing from a mixed number to improper form
- Multiply the denominator by the integer (whole number).
- Add the result to the numerator.
- Place the answer in the numerator and keep the original denominator.
= 5(1) +4 = 9 = 
Changing from improper form to a mixed number
- Divide the numerator by the denominator
- Write down the integer (whole number) and next to it place the remainder in the numerator of a fraction.
- Keep the original denominator.
